Balloon Form #2

This is one of the first pieces I've done on canvas in a decade or so. The pen usually doesn't work on canvas because of the rough texture of it, but I put about five layers of primer on the canvas and sanded it until it was completely smooth.

Oliver has been really into deep ocean creatures lately. He's even working on perfecting his David Attenborough accent. Maybe it's because I've watched his Deep Ocean portion of Blue Planet a hundred times in the past couple of months, but this reminds me of some of the deep sea marine life like sea cucumbers, and jellies whose bodies have no skeletal structure, enabling them to move with a uniquely awkward grace that would seem impossible if someone told you about it. I love your stuff, Paul. I wish I could see more of it in real life.

You know, oddly enough, when I was in 4th grade or so, our entire class did a big study on marine life and we were each given a species of fish to write a report on and paint a picture of... And mine just so happened to be the Sea Cucumber... I absolutely hated it at the time... I mean, why couldn't I get something bad-ass like a Hammerhead Shark or a Manta Ray??? No, as my luck would have it, I was stuck with painting a sea turd...
Anyway, I hadn't even thought of that in decades, but now that you point it out, maybe having to paint that Sea Cucumber way back then may have been some kind of subconscious influence on these Balloon Form pieces... Very interesting.
